Today is World Teachers’ Day – a day to recognise, celebrate and thank all those in education globally.

The UNESCO initiative has been celebrating teachers around the world since 1994 and brings together governments, organisations, private sectors, teachers and experts in the field of teaching.
Isn’t it curious that one of the most pivotal professions in our society today, that impacts our young people and affects the way we live our life, rarely receives the respect or acknowledgement it deserves.
It’s an extraordinary job they do – to teach, support and inspire our children. Teachers are the most valuable resource in our education.
“You cannot put a price on inspiring a child to be the best they can be,” said author Alison May. “Teachers are the unsung heroes of our communities and they can really influence our society in such a positive way. I was fortunate to work in education for twenty years and was able to see teaching and support at its best by dedicated and hard-working staff,” added Alison.
“Along with my mum, teachers helped inspire me and gave me the fundamentals and love of, reading and writing. This helped create the person that I am today – doing my dream job of writing children’s books. My most influential teacher was Mr Michael Screech who taught me English from the age of eleven; it was my absolute joy to invite him to my book launch in May after all those years and to be awarded an ‘A’ from him! I felt very proud and was able to thank him for his encouragement and tell him what a difference he had made to me”
In the UK, there are around 9 million pupils in education with approximately 500,000 teachers. Teachers use their knowledge and passion for their chosen subject to help children unlock capabilities and talents that they didn’t even know they had.
You may remember a truly brilliant teacher from school who made a real difference to your life. So, take the opportunity to say thank you to the teachers that made a positive difference in your life.
Happy World Teachers’ Day 2017.
