National Writing Day – get creative!

Hello everyone!  Bella here….reporting from the Chatterbox in Silver Birch Dell.  We’re all very excited as today is National Writing Day – a celebration of writing creatively. Poems, stories, letters, raps, songs, scripts and more – encouraging schools, libraries, writing groups and communities across the country to share in this celebration through a series of events and activities.

We want people from across the UK to put pen to paper, unleash their imagination and make their voices heard. Author Alison May from the Behind The Fairy Door children’s books shares her top tips for getting started…

“I always start by thinking about the weather, season, flowers and so on and which characters I want to focus upon. My mood determines this along with what I see from my view on the day, wherever I am I turn to my notebooks which are full of ideas and many scribbles! Normally a story is inspired by a day-dream or a conversation or a situation but it is not always convenient to write there and then. It is so important to jot things down as you think of them. This is why having scribbles is a must!” says Alison.

“I really enjoy the time I spend writing, surrounding myself with peace and quiet to really absorb myself into my imagination. I always picture in my mind’s eye what I see.

Setting the scene for me is crucial so readers are able to be part of it. I imagine my characters, their voices, their conversations and body-language. Being descriptive is so important at from smells, surroundings and colour.”

Thanks Alison…Happy National Writing Day…get writing!
